If you think of your professors as professionals, mentors, or even baby-sitters, you might like Alfred. Every professor at Alfred University has a doctorate or the equivalent in his or her field of study. Departments and classes tend to be small, even intimate. While professors at some other universities may leave the teaching to a few bewildered TAs, faculty at Alfred are actively involved with their students. It’s also not uncommon to be invited to a professor’s home for tea or a cookout.

Diversity

It’s hard to explain exactly how diversity manifests itself at Alfred University. Certainly a school with a minority population of less than 10 percent can’t claim to be all that diverse. However, anyone walking along Academic Alley today would see smiling faces from a variety of ethnicities and nationalities. Minority student groups bring an unmistakable vibrancy to campus life. It is fair to say that the small numbers of blacks, Latinos, and Asians that are on campus are well integrated into the campus...

Guys & Girls

Guys? They’re pretty sloppy and a touch androgynous (even the jocks). Girls? They’re pretty sloppy and a touch androgynous. What can I say? We’ve got a huge art department. It’s rumored that Playboy magazine once rated Alfred University as having the ugliest girls. It’s a rumor, of course. There are very attractive people to be found on campus (although it’s hard to tell under all those layers). The men’s swim team, for instance, seems to be getting quite a bit of buzz.

Athletics

Team sports take on an interesting dimension here at school, one that emphasizes the individual. Here sports seem to be more about participation than competition. Attendance at sporting events varies depending on the day. As the University sees increased and more diverse enrollment, however, team sports are improving. An estimated one in five undergrads take part in our 20 NCAA Division III varsity sports, and half of our students play either intramural or club sports.
