The professors here get to know their students. They know their stuff, and they’re passionate about their work. This can lead to impossible homework assignments and endless amounts of papers, but there’s a reason for all of it. The professors never cease to challenge or lower their expectations for any of their students. Classes are rarely all lectures; they usually revolve around group discussion.

A school that is 80 percent white cannot be considered diverse. To put things in perspective, Carleton doesn’t have drawing power to attract minorities to the school. Located in rural Minnesota, it’s not surrounded by any cultural diversity—unless you count pig and cow farms as separate diverse institutions. Carls are pretty non-judgmental, open-minded people. The biggest stigma about Carleton is the non-attractive students. Carls are in the red end of the ugly alert. However, the longer you’re at Carleton, the hotter the campus becomes. Whether these are the “Carleton goggles” or your parameters for attraction have simply readjusted, by the time you leave you’ll have a new understanding of having a personality. Athletics

For a Division III academical school, varsity sports aren’t a big draw. It’s difficult for Carleton to field competitive teams because the academic standards are so high. There are a few varsity teams that capture the hearts of fans, the women’s basketball team continually holds a top ten national ranking, and the women’s swimming and cross country teams sent athletes to the U.S. Olympic team in Athens.
