Academics

The majority of teachers are extremely interested in their subject, and it translates into their teaching. Most are also willing to help you in any way they can—during class, in office hours, or through e-mail.”

Diversity

“Trying to find a person of color at Colby is like the search for rainbow marshmallows in a bowl of Lucky Charms. You spot a few falling into the bowl as you’re pouring, but when you set your mind to finding as many as you can, none turn up.”

Guys & Girls

Colby is a good looking campus with a wide range of personalities.”

Academics

Colby is a liberal arts school through and through. While we haven’t eliminated core requirements entirely like some of the more progressive schools, we’ve whittled them down to seven “distribution requirements.” All Colby students take an introductory English course as freshmen, and then have the rest of their time at school to take one class each in arts, historical studies, literature, quantitative reasoning, and social sciences. Colby also requires three semesters of a foreign language, two natural...

Diversity

We have a large population of international students, and minorities are very vocal. The campus is pretty polarized between the activist types and the non-political kids. The Foss/Mary Low side of campus tends to be more politically aware and diverse, or at least more aware of diversity. Social class has been a particular topic of concern lately—many people see Colby as very elitist. All these diversity related issues, though, are pretty actively brought to light. We’ve had a Racial Awareness Week and a...

Guys & Girls

Most people choose to come to Colby because of the friendliness of the students. Colby folks smile at each other, make conversation easily, and are overwhelmingly optimistic. Alcohol is definitely a huge part of the social scene, though, and can get to be a bit much at times. Great chem-free living is very important for people who aren’t into the drinking scene. Work-hard, play-hard is a term practically modeled off social life at Colby. Classes are rigorous and homework does pile up, but for most students,...

Athletics

Colby is definitely not famous for its athletic prowess. “Real” sports don’t get too much attention here, certainly not as much as they do at major universities with big football teams. Lacrosse and soccer can be pretty popular, and hockey games are comparatively well attended. The Bates football rivalry and the Bowdoin hockey rivalry boost the attendance at those games, as well. But, despite the lack of emphasis on varsity sports, Colby students are outdoorsy and athletic. Lots of people ski and snowboard...
