Academics

Gonzaga is a relaxed, moderately difficult, student-friendly university, which entails benefits and drawbacks. Gonzaga’s focus is on teaching rather than research, so you won’t be rubbing elbows with “leading lights.” Professors are teaching because they want to, not to fill quotas as they work on their next paper. Students are taught mostly by professors, not TAs or adjuncts. This fosters a relaxed and non-competitive attitude. Students help their fellow students, and cut-throat competition is unheard of....

Diversity

As statistics strongly suggest, Gonzaga is not a hotbed of racial diversity. Virtually the only noticeable “ethnic” presence on campus is the contingent from the far east (mainly Japan and Korea, but also Russia and Taiwan). These students tend to be rather isolated, both by the linguistic barrier and by their diligent study habits. There are many minority clubs, but they tend to be small and cliquish. For many, the overwhelmingly Caucasian nature is off-putting. The administration is working to promote...

Guys & Girls

Because of the climate and the Catholically-tinged atmosphere at the school, Gonzaga is not a major meat market. The first few weeks of school give freshman girls the chance to vie for the “shortest skirt” title, and buff guys like wandering shirtless when they get the chance. But Mother Nature puts a quick stop to such strutting—there is no beach anywhere nearby. Fashion plays a minimal role at Gonzaga; snobbishness and competition between or among the sexes is not particularly virulent. It’s far too...

Athletics

Any student call tell you that basketball is the saving grace of Gonzaga athletics. The men’s team is consistently very good, games are raucous and electrifying, and students get in for free. True, they must wait in line for at least an hour or two on Sunday nights to ensure a ticket. If you want to be near the floor on gameday, you also have to line up outside the arena hours before the doors open. The wait is worth it: a front-row seat (not that you’d ever sit down) to Gonzaga basketball, with 2,000 rabid...
