Academics

“I have enjoyed learning from the professors at Hopkins. Although they are all busy, I have found that they are genuinely interested in helping students learn. If students make an effort to go to office hours, they should have no complaints with professors.”

Diversity

“There is some diversity of skin color. There is a fairly large Asian population. There are a lot of African Americans in Baltimore, but on campus, it doesn’t make up that large of a percentage. There are only a few Hispanics, but a fairly large Jewish...”

Guys & Girls

“Both sexes complain about the other’s lack of ‘hotness.’ I’ve seen a handful of decent girls, but really not a large number. Most of the girls I’m friends with play for the women’s ultimate Frisbee team, so I didn’t meet them on the basis of anything but...”

Athletics

“Lacrosse is huge, and the team is really good. The games we went to were tons of fun, because the whole student body really comes out. Other sports are pretty poorly attended, and no one pays much attention. You can definitely play IM sports with your...”

Academics

Hopkins students are generally pleased with academics. If you ask many students the deciding factor in choosing to attend Hopkins, academics tops the list of reasons. There is some contention between engineering/science and humanities/social science students. The latter have more control over their schedules, and their classes focus less on memorization and more on critical thinking. Students also disagree on the quality of teaching. In large lecture courses, professors don’t really get a chance to get to...

Diversity

Hopkins students disagree about diversity at Hopkins. A recent survey showed that while many white students thought that Hopkins was very diverse, minority students disagreed. Hopkins does have larger Asian and Indian populations, and smaller African American and Hispanic populations. In addition, there are fewer students from Western Europe, and many more from Eastern Europe. While the University is diverse presently, it is working towards greater diversity. Students also believe that it needs to work on...

Guys & Girls

People get accepted into Hopkins because of their intelligence, not because of their attractiveness. That isn’t to say that there aren’t attractive people at Hopkins. The biggest difference is that students at Hopkins pay less attention to their appearance than students at other schools. There’s no one type of person that dominates Hopkins. There are preppy people, jocks, and foreign students. Girls like the near 50:50 ratio of guys to girls, and it isn’t hard to meet people of the opposite sex since almost...

Athletics

Athletics are not a major focus at Johns Hopkins. Even lacrosse, the most popular sport, doesn’t bring out the whole student body. Tickets to events are free for students. Hopkins has one stadium, which is small by university standards. Homecoming is one of the few games where the stadium is filled. Students often are surprised that Hopkins celebrates Homecoming with a lacrosse game in the spring. Club and IM sports are open to everyone and aren’t overly competitive. A relatively small number of students,...
