Academics

UCSB is the secret spot for really amazing professors, and their credentials prove it. I think the professors have figured out that Santa Barbara is a great place to live, and they can get paid while they are here.”

Diversity

“My culture shock was mostly due to the huge amount of very rich people both attending UCSB and living in Santa Barbara. Also, I think over 95 percent of the students are from California, so if you are an out-of-state student, you’ll be a minority in that...”

Guys & Girls

Academics

Although each department might have its monotone,
sleep-inducing professor, most of the instructors are experts in their fields, excited about what they teach, and very accessible. UCSB is unique in that it has very few graduate students, so teachers are focused on their undergraduates. They have more time, teach almost all of the classes offered each quarter, and answer e-mails quickly. In the first two years of college, while people take their general education classes, they don’t necessarily get to know...

Diversity

Demographically, the UCSB student population is predominantly Caucasian and middle- to upper- class. Diversity on campus, as far as clubs and organizations, is definitely present, although not highly publicized. In other words, the ethnic organizations are important to those who are in them, but invisible to practically everyone else. The University does offer many clubs and services that students can take advantage of, and cultural events are becoming much more popular. Most students feel comfortable and...

Guys & Girls

It’s hard to beat a surfer boy biking to the beach with his wet suit down to his waist and a surfboard under his arm, or a couple of bikini-clad girls playing volleyball on the sand. Students agree that the hottie level is high here, but they disagree on the inside beauty. Promiscuous and snobby are the negative words associated with some students, but then some described people as extremely friendly and mellow. According to other UCSB students, most don’t expect any big dates—UCSB is more of a “spend money...

Athletics

Some of the varsity sports teams at UCSB are actually very good, frequently winning their divisions and making it to national tournaments, yet it seems like half of the school is oblivious. Basketball and volleyball games can usually draw large and loud crowds, but without a football team, UCSB lacks the media spotlight and big campus athletes that other campuses draw. Still, club sports are highly competitive
and well-organized.

Surfing, ultimate Frisbee, rowing, sailing, and snowboarding and skiing have...
